Boston Among Top Cities with Largest Skills Gap

Boston might be the best city for job opportunities and growth, but that does not mean that supply and demand for skills work in full harmony.
LinkedIn’s latest workforce report identifies coastal cities as facing the most skills gap — the divide between demand and supply of a certain skill set in a labor market. According to the report, Boston ranks fourth among cities with the largest skills gap after New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The report aggregated the number of skills that are in shortage and surplus to quantify the gap. But in Boston, the gap is mostly represented in skill shortage.

What skills are in short supply in Boston, you ask? The top four are oral communication, business management, leadership and literacy.

But it’s not just shortages; there are some skills in surplus as well. Negotiation, educational administration, procurement and real estate are some examples.
